How Volume Conversion Works

Every unit of volume is a fixed multiple of a single base unit: this tool uses the liter as that base. A US gallon is defined as exactly 3.785411784 liters, a US cup as approximately 0.236588 liters, and so on; conversion between any two units takes one multiplication and one division through that shared base instead of a lookup table for every possible pairing. This shared base supports dozens of units without making the calculation more complicated.

There's no submit button and no page reload, because the entire calculation happens client-side in JavaScript. Key Definitions

Liter (L): the base metric unit of volume this tool converts through, equal to 1,000 milliliters or one cubic decimeter.

US customary units (cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, gallon, quart, pint, fluid ounce): the volume units standardized for everyday use in the United States, with exact liter equivalents defined in NIST Special Publication 330, the official U.S. reference for metric and customary unit conversions.

Imperial (UK) units: the gallon and fluid ounce as defined under the UK's Weights and Measures Act. The gallon is about 20% larger than its US counterpart, while the fluid ounce is about 4% smaller.

Using the US and Imperial Unit Toggles

Two units on this page, gallons and fluid ounces, have a second, smaller decision built in: US or Imperial (UK). A US gallon (3.78541 L) and an imperial gallon (4.54609 L) are not the same volume, and neither are a US fluid ounce (29.5735 mL) and an imperial fluid ounce (28.4131 mL). When either of those units is selected, a toggle appears so you can specify which system you mean. If you're not sure which applies, check the container or recipe you're converting from. American products and recipes almost always mean the US measure, while UK and older Commonwealth sources typically mean imperial.

Precision and Rounding

Some customary conversion factors behind this volume converter are not round numbers: a US cup is 236.588 mL, not 240, and a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, not 3.8. This tool carries full precision through the calculation and rounds only for display, so results stay accurate even when you're chaining several conversions together. For everyday use, two to three decimal places is plenty; for anything lab-related or dosage-sensitive, use the displayed calculator result rather than a memorized approximation.

mL to Cups and Cups to mL

To convert mL to cups, divide by 236.588. To go the other direction, multiply cups by 236.588. For example, 500 mL ÷ 236.588 ≈ 2.11 cups, and 1.5 cups × 236.588 ≈ 354.88 mL.

Cups to Tablespoons

There are 16 US tablespoons in 1 US cup, so multiply cups by 16 to get tablespoons, or divide tablespoons by 16 to get cups. Half a cup, for instance, is exactly 8 tablespoons.

Tablespoons to mL and Teaspoons to mL

1 US tablespoon equals 14.7868 mL, and 1 US teaspoon equals 4.92892 mL. A recipe calling for 2 tablespoons of oil is about 29.57 mL, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract is about 4.93 mL.

Quarts to Cups and Cups to Quarts

1 US quart equals 4 cups. To convert quarts to cups, multiply by 4; to convert cups to quarts, divide by 4. 3 quarts, for example, equals exactly 12 cups.

Quarts to Gallons and Gallons to Quarts

1 US gallon equals 4 quarts. Divide a quart value by 4 to calculate gallons, or multiply a gallon value by 4 to calculate quarts. A 5-gallon container holds exactly 20 quarts.

Pints, Cups, and Quarts

1 US pint equals 2 cups, and 1 quart equals 2 pints. So converting pints to cups is a straight doubling, and cups to pints is a straight halving. Three pints, for instance, is 6 cups or 1.5 quarts.

Cups to Gallons and Gallons to Cups

1 US gallon equals 16 cups. To convert cups to gallons, divide by 16; gallons to cups, multiply by 16. 6 cups is 0.375 gallons.

Fluid Ounces to Cups

1 US cup equals 8 fluid ounces, so dividing fl oz by 8 gives cups, and multiplying cups by 8 gives fl oz. 20 fl oz, for example, is 2.5 cups.

mL to Liters and Liters to mL

1 liter equals 1,000 mL. Divide mL by 1,000 to get liters, or multiply liters by 1,000 to get mL. For example, 750 mL is 0.75 L, and 2.5 L is 2,500 mL.

Cubic Centimeters, Cubic Feet, and Cubic Meters

1 cm³ equals exactly 1 mL, which makes cm³-to-mL conversions a 1:1 relabeling. 1 cubic foot equals 28.3168 liters, and 1 cubic meter equals 1,000 liters, useful for anything sized in construction or shipping terms rather than kitchen or lab terms.

Pints, Cubic Meters, and Fluid Ounces in Liters

1 US pint equals 0.473176 liters, 1 cubic meter equals 1,000 liters, and 1 US fluid ounce equals 0.0295735 liters. These show up less often than the pairs above, but the same base-unit math applies: convert through liters, and the relationship between any two volume units falls out of the same table used throughout this page.
