The area converter follows one pattern: multiply the input value by a conversion factor, then read the result in the target unit. That factor comes from squaring the linear, one-dimensional conversion factor between the two units. Skipping this step is the single most common source of manual calculation errors. For example, 1 foot equals 0.3048 meters, but 1 square foot equals 0.3048², or 0.092903, square meters, not 0.3048 square meters.
This squaring rule applies to every area unit pair, including ones that look unrelated at first glance, like acres and square meters. An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet.
